Well written book about Obama's run for office and first 2 years as president. It reads like a history book with parts of his personal life woven in, and lots of behind the scenes views of the presidency. Enjoyable, though lengthy, book. This movie answers the question, "What would happen if no one knew who the Beatles were, or any of their music?" The movie isn't as great as the music, but it was a nice escape from trying times. I was struck when the main character was singing/screaming the song "Help!" because he needs so much help by that point. It ended in (what seems to be) the only satisfying way it could, because all you need is loveThis movie answers the question, "What would happen if no one knew who the Beatles were, or any of their music?" Not a fan if the mystical elements woven into this story, as it seems to downgrade the work of Harriet Tubman. There are nice poetic turns, but I was surprised that the author didn't tell us what the protagonist looked like until the end of the story. I believe this book is an Oprah's book club selection because of the subject matter, but not because of great writing skills. Nice book loaded with pictures and personal stories of the Irish in KC. It was good to read the history fleshed out of people that I had always heard of, and now know why they're famous. This is a sad telling of the tale of Donald Trump, trying to be president. As many have said, there is no "new" news here. It is surprising how anyone can work in such a toxic environment. Well written book explaining the origins of the Moms Demand Action movement by the founder, Shannon Watts. It also lays out the case for changes in gun laws at the state and federal levels, with documented statistics and footnotes. The movement is NOT about taking guns away, but about common sense gun laws. There is also a "manual" about getting involved in politics and running for office, which was impressive and inspiring. This book is popular in our area, with its many references to things we know (Topeka, Lawrence, Westboro church, even Stull). However, the story rambles thru the boy, his parents and their work, and another boy. The moral of the story is not there, nor any bottom line by the end. I found myself more interested in the boys tales, and wondering why the author felt it was necessary to tell us about the parents. I really wanted to know what happened to the "lost boy" but we aren't told (why?). The best part was the author telling us in a postlude about his return to Topeka, and the great cover art. In terms of story telling, this was a let down. This book is popular in our area, with its many references to things we know (Topeka, Lawrence, Westboro church, even Stull). The editors present stories from survivors of school shootings in America, from UT-Austin in 1966 to Santa Fe High School in 2018, including Columbine High School, Sandy Hook grade school and Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School. It is not as graphic as video on TV, but it's still upsetting. I learned things (like survivors guilt and PTSD are rampant). The stories are presented in random order instead of chronological order. There is very little said about causes of or possible solutions to school gun violence (see the book "Fight Like a Mother" for that). I thank the editors for their efforts (which they admit were upsetting for them, too), but think they could have done a better job.The editors present stories from survivors of school shootings in America, from UT-Austin in 1966 to Santa Fe High School in 2018, including Columbine High School, Sandy Hook grade school and Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School. It's a Dave Barry book, so of course it's laugh-out-loud funny. There are life lessons here that he's learned from his dog, Lucy, who is full of joy. There's also an important "we never thought this could happen to us" story at the end, where the lessons are put into use. I esp. liked this: "I almost never argue about politics anymore, and I have pretty much stopped watching the nonstop freak-out-a-thon that is cable TV news. I am a far happier person for it. The world may be going to hell, but then again it always was."It's a Dave Barry book, so of course it's laugh-out-loud funny. This movie is not for everyone. If you remember being a senior in high school, anxious to find your place in the world and to get away from home, and struggled with relationships (esp. with a parent), this will bring back a lot of memories. The acting of the mother and daughter was outstanding. The daughter is played by an Irish actress who pulled off an American accent very well.
