Rocha visited the Lusatia region from 1987 to 1990, documenting the destruction of the Spreewald region—a unique network of rivers and channels (designated UNESCO biosphere reserve since 1991)—and the culture of the Sorbian community, the only ethnic minority in former East Germany. Rocha’s filmic protest of the destruction of Sorbian culture, villages, and landscapes in order to expand coal mining was met with little approval from East German officials.
