I am only writing this comment in response to the first comment. The book is broken into three sections but it is not three different stories. The entire book follows Mitchum while he investigates different crimes as a "private investigator". Each section follows the same timeline put the different cases that Mitchum investigates. I don't think it was necessary to split the book into three sections but it's understandable being that it jumps ahead a few months at a time after each case. Also, the ending is satisfying.
