Dark Night

a True Batman Story
Dec 21, 2016KateHillier rated this title 5 out of 5 stars
Paul Dini thought he had it all: a great job working on Batman: The Animated Series, a geek pad to die for, and a 'relationship'. There are other issues in his life but he does his best to mask them. Then he is severely beaten during a mugging and he finds himself deeply affected by this. Not surprising but his coping mechanisms, coming from childhood, are to have fictional characters talk him through certain aspects. Some good, some not so good. Doesn't everyone have a version of Batman and the Joker hanging around? It's a fantastic and honest story. It's done matter of factly but it is highly emotional and personal as well. Paul paints himself as honestly as he can and the art reflects that as well. Batman and the Joker and the other characters he conjures are larger than life - he himself is not. Batman fans will appreciate this but you don't even need to appreciate Batman to sympathise with this story about an ordinary guy overcoming something extraordinarily awful.
