A Great Reckoning

a Novel Featuring Inspector Armand Gamache /

I ended up liking this book (especially in comparison to another “detective/mystery” type book I read following this one). To note: I read it for a book discussion group held at my local library and had not read any of the previous 12 (or so) novels leading up to this one in the series. Now, Armande Gamache, to me, was all to perfect - everyone praised him even though he took things into his own hands when he clearly didn’t have full control (to me, that doesn’t send a good message to readers - that is, thinking you can handle everything on your own). I did like the cast of characters at Three Pines and, though the map was sort of a side plot, I did enjoy that mystery. I wish I knew more about Gamache and Brébeuf (I was told at the group that tia was described better in previous books). I really liked how the end played out in the mystery between Gamache and Amelia. I didn’t feel Justice was served from Jacques Laurin’s arrogance and I also was disappointed that Huifen played a smaller role. Overall, I thought the beginning to be okay, the middle a bit too descriptive, but the ending was really good. 3.5 rating! I look forward to reading the earlier books in this series!
