Both subplots have strong moral underpinnings. The one involving threats to Ali's daughter-in-law's grandmother is the more plausible but less compellingly told. The other, beginning with a pregnant teenager on the run from a cult, has timely aspects. It's a page turner and takes up more of the book. While less plausibly told, it's highly gripping, and leaves the reader with important moral issues to think about.
