SUMMARY: Bear goes out for a snack, but gets caught in a storm. He becomes very afraid and can't find his way home. His friends are waiting back at the warm cave and notice that Bear has not returned. They form a search party to find Bear. When they bring him home, they form a cozy pile and go to sleep. ILLUSTRATIONS: As with all of the Bear books, the illustrations are lush, adorable, and expressive. THE GOOD: My favorite part of the Bear books is when friends rally together to help each other. Bear's friends do just that when he is lost in the storm. I love how they prepare before going out in the rain by getting a lamp and the smaller animals tying themselves together so they don't get lost. Then, when they are all back in the cave, they snuggle together in a safe and loving heap. THE NOT AS GOOD: I felt disconcerted in the middle of the book when Bear was scared and alone. He was so scared, he sat down and just froze in place. I would have liked to see him think of some positive things, like his friends, to help him get through this trying time. Although the friends come to help on the end, what about in the meantime? Kids need to learn how to get through fears when no one is there to help. AGE RECOMMENDATION: Ages 3-7
