McCabe is an Irish playwright and author. In this novel, the main theme is Protestant-Catholic tensions in Northern Ireland which are revealed through a young woman's story. However, the way in which her character is portrayed make her actions incomprehensible until her true nature is unconvincingly revealed at the book's climax. Although the message is clear, the characters are manipulated in inconsistent ways to make the point.
