 …
Christian (McGregor), an idealistic and impoverished young writer who, newly arrived in Montmartre, is haphazardly inducted into a circle of young bohemians led by Toulouse-Lautrec. A comedy of mistaken identities ensues, quickly enmeshing the young poet in a love triangle involving the unobtainable and consumptive Satine (Kidman), queen courtesan of the Moulin Rouge, and the foppish Duke of Roxbury, his villainous rival for her affections.

Not my type of movie, too dark and an old time period. I am sure some will like it but not me.

👨‍🎨 (John Huston film) Jose Ferrer plays Toulouse-Lautrec with a set of knee pads, and his lower legs painfully strapped up to his thighs. Perhaps he used that pain in his characterization. Ferrer made his reputation playing another deformed French smartass, Cyrano de Bergerac. A sumptuous production, and a fine movie. Zsa Zsa is there too.

The library database overlaid the comments and quotes in the 2001 version with Kidman/Ewan McGregor, and the one released in 1952 with Zsa Zsa Gábor.

2001 version ★★★★: Both the singing and acting performances of Kidman (as star singer/courtesan Satine) and McGregor (writer/lover of Satine) are good to excellent. Among the best musicals in the league of the recent 2019 Judy with ‎Renée Zellweger.

1952 version ★★★★½: Amazed that I enjoyed this MR better than Kidman/McGregor remake, and that it is not so much as a musical or romcom but a touching story on many human levels. The dancing and singing aside, the entire script is interesting and full of memorable quotes.

I can see why Zsa Zsa was a big attraction as a sex symbol from her singing performance though the real female star here is Colette Marchand as Marie Charlet. It received seven Academy Award nominations (including Best Picture Best Director - John Huston, Best Actor - José Ferrer and Best Supporting Actress - Colette Marchand) and won two.

Spectacular. Spectacular. Returns are fixed at 10%. There is a big open dance number at the beginning and Kidman has a broken leg for it. I couldn’t tell. Directing.

VERY GOOD 1952 British drama film with Jose Ferrer as Toulouse. Quality production and fine cast. This film version of the 1950 novel by Pierre La Mure is quite a contrast to the 2001 film directed by Baz Luhrmann.

GREAT 2001 film which is third and final installment of Baz Luhrman's 'Red Curtain Trilogy'. This is SO well done at many challenging levels and was FAR better than his second installment of Romeo and Juliet. I will be watching first part 'Strictly Ballroom' soon to see what I think.
All the film production elements in Moulin Rouge are VERY high quality - Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor are excellent as are all the side parts.

This movie is so crazy, I laughed through the whole thing. In a good way!

See Nostalgia Critic review. I liked Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman, and the remixes were descent, but it was so off-putting in it's editing, and the romance and motives were more spontaneous and half baked than if your cake suddenly decided to blow up in your oven half way through the bake.

My favorite musical of the last twenty years. Tragic, funny, a show within a show, catchy songs what more could you want.
