Linda Castillo follows her instant New York Times bestseller, Shamed, with Outsider, an electrifying thriller about a woman on the run hiding among the Amish.

While enjoying a sleigh ride with his children, Amish widower Adam Lengacher discovers a car stuck in a snowdrift and an unconscious woman inside. He calls upon Chief of Police Kate Burkholder for help, and she is surprised to recognize the driver: fellow cop and her former friend, Gina Colorosa.

Years before, Kate and Gina were best friends at the police academy and patrol officers in Columbus, but time and distance have taken them down two very different paths. Now, Gina reveals a shocking story of betrayal and revenge that has forced her to run for her life. She's desperate for protection, and the only person she can trust is Kate—but can Kate trust her? Or will Gina's dark past put them all in danger?

As a blizzard bears down on Painters Mill, Kate helps Gina go into hiding on Adam's farm. While the tough-skinned Gina struggles to adjust to the Amish lifestyle, Kate and state agent John Tomasetti delve into the incident that caused Gina to flee. But as Kate gets closer to the truth, a killer lies in wait. When violence strikes, she must confront a devastating truth that changes everything she thought she knew not only about friendship, but the institution to which she's devoted her life.

Nice to not have an Amish person be the bad guy for once! A nice change. I really enjoy her books.

This book was a little different from her others but still a great read. Found out a little more about Kate Burkholder’s past. I love this series.

I love the Kate Burkholder series, and found that this novel kept me guessing til the end!

Another entry in the reliably wonderful Kate Burkholder series. I really liked that this one was quite different - not a straightforward murder mystery like most of the others. We get a lot of Kate's back story here and also more than usual about the Amish culture.

Different. In the past, when I started reading a Kate Burkholder story.....I would say....ok....it's 11 pm....I'll read one more hour....then at midnight just one more hour.....then reaching for the book as soon as I could in the morning. This one is not like that....I read it for 15 minutes....ho hum....put it aside. I'm not sure I will finish it....It's not terrible.....it just doesn't keep me wondering and waiting for the next surprise or twist.

I could also say that this was my least favorite Burkholder novel. I found it difficult to like Gina although I could understand Kate helping her. Wouldn't necessarily recommend this one.

5 stars in my opinion. Interesting insight on living among the Amish. Fast read as it's that good.

I have read all of the Kate Burkholder mysteries. This one was not a favorite. I prefer detective novels / police procedurals to involve solving a crime, not aiding and abetting a possible criminal friend. Kristi & Abby Taby

I enjoyed the Amish children in this book, but missed Kate's department of interesting people. Would like more of Tomasetti and Kate's Romance -- hopefully marriage finally.

"The only time to look down on your neighbor is when you're bending over to help them." We can definitely learn from the Amish.

Outsider is, hands down, one of my very favorite in this series!! I did NOT want to put it down! LOTS of suspense. I so enjoyed reading about Kate's journey to becoming a police officer. It was also fascinating to read more about the Amish and how they exist without power even during a horrific snowstorm.

Linda Castillo is a consistently great writer. As far as I'm concerned the Kate Burkholder series can go on forever!!
