"Born Archibald Leach in 1904, he came to America as a teenaged acrobat to find fame and fortune, but he was always haunted by his past. His father was an alcoholic, and his mother was committed to an asylum when Archie was eleven years old. He believed her to be dead until he was informed she was alive when he was thirty-one years old. Because of this experience Grant would have difficulty forming close attachments throughout his life; he married five times and had numerous affairs. Drawing on Grant's own papers, extensive archival research, and interviews with family and friends, this is the definitive portrait of a movie immortal"--Page 4 of cover.

Enjoyed this very much. A tremendous amount of information.

The author's premise is that Archie Leach, a poor, lower class boy from Bristol, England, fled an unhappy childhood, joined an acrobat troupe, traveled to America, segued into vaudeville, then theater, then movies and eventually reinvented himself as the suave gentleman, Cary Grant. Living this life in "disguise" created tensions that took him his whole life to resolve. Despite having a compelling subject matter, this book is boring. Eyman goes off on anecdotal tangents about people and social events in Grant's milieu and provides a wealth of irrelevant detail that adds little. Unfortunately, there's little about others who must have been important, such as his agent, his tailor. And poorly written into the bargain with grammatical mistakes, hackneyed, trite phrases and unexplained Hollywood terminology. i struggled to finish it.
