This modern day adult fantasy is a gritty delight. Author Eoin Colfer at his best.

Everett "Squib" Moreau is a young man living in the bayous of Louisiana who crosses a paths with a corrupt cop when he witnesses a drug deal gone wrong.

Wyvern, Vern for short, is a Netflix-watching, vodka-drinking, crude and grumpy dragon hiding in the swamp when he begrudgingly becomes friends with Squib. Together, they attempt to free themselves of the evil plans of Regency Hooke, the corrupt cop that has his sights set on destroying them both.

This book is not your normal fantasy novel but it is complete fun and a great entry novel to anyone looking to try the genre.

15-year-old Everett "Squib" Moreau and seriously bent Constable Hooke play out their rivalry in the Louisiana swamps around Petit Bateau. Hooke has amorous and later murderous designs on Squib's beautiful mother. Squib helps his mom scrape by doing various odd jobs on the swamp. Until the night that Squib videos Hooke kill a dealer and Hooke attempts to blow him out of the water with all kinds of military hardware, which basically wakes a sleeping dragon. Vern, short for Wyvern, has been hiding out in the swamps away from any murderous mobs that might gather for his skin. Vern has a pretty good life carved out, drinking vodka, watching Netflix, and wearing his favorite "Flashdance" t-shirts until Squib finds out about him. They work out an agreement that gets Vern the comforts he needs and Squib a sort-of father figure. Until Constable Hooke muddies the water, finding out about Vern and tries to turn him into a weapon to take over the New Orleans crime organization in which he plays a small part.

The eventual series of conflicts brings Vern out of hiding to assist his human friend.

The writing is a delight. Grouchy Vern comes around to at least tolerate a few humans. Hooke is a seriously psycho individual with military training and administrative criminal ambitions. And New Orleans takes a bow in the proceedings.

Read this book.
