Both hilarious and heartwarming. I would go to see this movie! Georgina is spinning her wheels in the hospitality arena. Unlikely and outrageous events seem to follow her around resulting in frequent job changes. Catching her semi-famous comedienne cheating on her the same day she gets sacked lands her at rock bottom. Her brother-in-law fixes her up with a one-day gig tending bar for a funeral reception and while there she bumps into her first love -- but he doesn't seem to recognize her! More than a fluffy romance, this book uses the lense of "Wuthering Heights" to explore Georgina's relationships with her friends, housemate and her family. Will she ever get to be a writer? Will she have the nerve to use her own material in the open mike contest at her bar? There is lots of snarky dialogue as well as a great cast of quirky characters. Nana Hogg may have a small role, but she will not be forgotten.

This, I really liked. I went into it expecting something more on the romance end of the rom-com spectrum, but this was really more about the heroine's emotional journey than the romantic subplot, and it was incredibly well-done. Smart and funny and really, really emotional, and oh-so-very British. Delightful, and thought-provoking, and feminist, and fun.

This was a great, fun and easy book to read; a highly entertaining romance. I laughed out loud many times, but I also got misty-eyed several times as well. It really hits all the emotions in well-timed hills and valleys. There are quite a few UK references and use of slang that can be a bit confounding at times (like what is IRN BRU?) so I looked up some, but not all of them. The story is strong enough to ignore these if you want to, but I highly recommend looking up what a Calippo is when that reference is used near the end of the book. I couldn't stop laughing at that one! The one major flaw I found with the book was the male lead character Lucas who seems to be a real unicorn of a guy; very noble, patient, self-aware and quick to apologize. If only! This is the first book I've read by Mhairi McFarlane, but it will not be my last. Highly recommendable!

Enjoyed it from beginning to end. A light read, perfect for the summer time.
