Emma London never thought she had anything in common with her grandmother Genevieve London. The regal old woman came from wealthy and bluest-blood New England stock, but that didn't protect her from life's cruelest blows: the disappearance of Genevieve's young son, followed by the premature death of her husband. But Genevieve rose from those ashes of grief and built a fashion empire that was respected the world over, even when it meant neglecting her other son. When Emma's own mother died, her father abandoned her on his mother's doorstep. Genevieve took Emma in and reluctantly raised her--until Emma got pregnant her senior year of high school. Genevieve kicked her out with nothing but the clothes on her back...but Emma took with her the most important London possession: the strength not just to survive but to thrive. And indeed, Emma has built a wonderful life for herself and her teenage daughter, Riley. So what is Emma to do when Genevieve does the one thing Emma never expected of her and, after not speaking to her for nearly two decades, calls and asks for help?

My first book from this author was “Now That You Mention it”. I love the way she writes in the manner that we talk with the thoughts in parentheses after. Perfectly timed sarcastic or vulnerable, or funny thoughts. This was a great book as well. I will continue to read my way through her books.

Emotional and real and very well done.

Not everyone can write with depth, but that is what this author does.

This is the second book I've read by her and I will absolutely read a third. I may even read this one again.

Triggers: This book discusses the loss of a child and the loss of a parent.

This book was awesome! What an enjoyable and heartfelt read! Loved it!

The story line was engaging however the writing style lacked nuance. Repetitive dialogue, as Genevieve keeps having memory lapses and irritatingly "reviews the plot/ characters" as she tries to reorient herself. Love interest is hackneyed. Half way through I just skipped to the end to read the (unsatisfactory) resolution.

This was a heartfelt story about families, particularly the relationship between mothers and daughters. There was also the overlying theme on how people treat each other - especially their children. The story of the "Missing" that haunted Genevieve for her entire life and the influence this had on her remaining son - who unable to feel good about himself didn't really know how to related to others in his life. There were funny moments and many sad moments but this was so worth reading and getting to know all these people.

This is the first book that had me crying in a really long time. Such a sweet, “get you in your soul” kind of book, spanning multiple generations, many difficult and and complex family circumstances, which are all tied up in the end. Written about strong women, who show their strengths in very different ways, and men who at first appear strong but are weak, and also men who are extremely strong, but initially appear broken. I really loved all aspects of this book. An easy read, quick to get into.

Enjoyable read. Finished it quickly...because I wanted of those "have to get back to my book". Sadly I'm sure there are many people out there like these characters...which is sad because all any of us want is to be loved

An insightful look at some complex family relationships. Great characters that you will not soon forget! Highly recommended.

The cover of 'Life and Other Inconveniences', with its cute dog swimming joyously underwater, belies the depth of this profound story. The title is subtle in its irony and truth.

'Life and Other Inconveniences' is ripe with richness in her characters. It seems every other chapter reveals a plot surprise and, especially, a new layer of each and all of the characters - even the very minor characters: their past, their perceptions, their pain, their joy, their expectations, their weaknesses and their fears.

There are so many moments for laughter, moments that will make you cry but also make you grin with a big smile as they deal, sometimes very badly, with the daily "inconveniences" of their lives.

Higgins is perfection in writing imperfect human - and canine! - characters in 'Life and Other Inconveniences'.

You will be glad you read it.

one of Kristan Higgins best books to date and that is saying something since she is great.
Very touching book and kept me up until late trying to finish it. Was worth the sleepless night.
