"Chii and her husband are like any other happily married couple, except for one thing: Chii was assigned male at birth. Chii details her autobiographical account of growing up with gender dysphoria and ultimately deciding to transition in her early adult years. Shortly after Chii starts transitioning, she meets a man who is instantly enamored by her, and although he is surprised when Chii eventually tells him she used to live as a guy, he still wants to go out with her. As Chii continues to transition, her boyfriend supports her through the process, culminating in their marriage once her transition is complete"--Provided by Goodreads.com.

Conducted through a kind of Q&A format grounded in questions and misconceptions the book's author has had to deal with, "The Bride was a Boy" tells the tale of a Japanese woman undergoing her transition and jumping through all the legal hurdles to get married. Cute for it's chibi style and comprehensive in spite of its length, this book is a great introduction to trans culture and serves as good way to gain a deeper understanding of the trans perspective. Particularly because it manages to do this without lingering too heavily the thorns, barbs, and darker struggles many trans people go through, this is a perfect kind of 101 text for teens.

I was hoping for more story and fewer info pages/ explanations. The art is super cute, though.

All together underwhelming.
It has some good information but glosses over a lot of details and doesn't really touch at all on the struggle that is being transgender. The main character's life is presented like a fairy tale with little to no conflict at all and peppers in little bits of info most of which would be known to anyone familiar with the LGBTQ+ community.

It's a beautiful little memoir and what is being Trans 101 book all wrapped up into one book. Perfect for older pre-teens who like manga and learning more about different walks of life.
