On the margins of Tokyo, a dysfunctional band of outsiders are united by fierce loyalty, a penchant for petty theft and playful grifting. When the young son is arrested, secrets are exposed that upend their tenuous, below-the-radar existence and test their quietly radical belief that it is love-not blood-that defines a family.

A wonderful, tender, heart warming movie. The characters are very interesting and played with great talent. The strength of the movie is its simplicity and depth at the same time. It lingers with you.

The movie does not start with a BANG so it could be a test of your patience. It is not like watching Avenger or Star Wars. This is a PLAUSIBLE story and I would not be surprised if there are real-life examples out there.

It has English caption -- thank God it is not dubbed.

This is a story of an unconventional household made of flotsam and jetsam of Tokyo. They are not bound by blood but is that a requirement for a loving family?

Eventually, the scheme blew up in their face and I was moved when the end unfolded, especially impressed with the leading actress (nominally the mother of the household). Like one reviewer stated, the last 30 minutes is the key, even though the screenshot is simple -- a great performance.

One member (greatflicks) complained about being with english sub-titles, and that the fact was not indicated. Well, it is in all letters, under full record:
Language:Japanese
Language Note:Japanese dialogue with English subtitles; closed-captioned in English.
Of course, if you don't like to read...

I was disappointed in this boring movie for various reasons and gave it one star. Definitely not Oscar-worthy.

Thought provoking social drama that describes an unconventional household in a "bad" Tokyo neighborhood. It ponders a sort of family unit consisted of grownups and children who found each other due to plausibly exculpatory circumstances. Would those families become stronger and happier?

Slowly reveals the underlying story. Must be attentive to dialogue! Highly recommend to those with patience! Last half hour is critical to story.

Small-time thieves and scammers rescue an abused little girl. So far so sentimental, right? Well, Shoplifters is one of the best films of 2018, running neck-and-neck with Climax and I'd even give it a slight edge over Roma and The Favourite. You might expect a good script and fine acting, and it has all that, but this movie is surprisingly technically accomplished. For instance, how did they shoot in that tiny house set without a dull moment? There's a chase sequence near the end that would not be out of place in a pure action movie. If you're not bothered by subtitles and like unconventional family dramas, check it out.

I gave it a one star because I just learned it has sub titles. I hate subtitles and will not watch a movie with them. When I looked at all the information describing the move and people in it I saw no reference to their being subtitles. Sorry if I have offended anyone but if I want to read a story I will check out the book. Now get over it.

Hirokazu Koreeda’s ability to marvel at everyday life is as keen as ever in this gentle heart-tugger which challenges the idea of what constitutes “family”. One of Japan’s greatest living writer/directors, Koreeda plays his cards with restraint and detached compassion as he explores the tiny bonds and small tyrannies that go into making a family unit regardless of whether its members are tied by blood or by mutual need. A deeply human film that never shies away from sad truths yet still manages to soften those hard edges with warmth and humour.

Do you think she... chose us?
-Usually, you can't choose your own parents. But then, maybe it's stronger when you choose them yourself.
What is?
- What is... The bond.
===
But sometimes, it's better to choose your own family. If only not to have expectations...
===
The reason they hit you... isn't because you are bad. If they say they hit you
because they love you, that is a lie. If they love you, if they really love you, this is what you do... This is what you do... (hugging her tight...)
===
But won't they get mad at you?
-No different if I go back now.
===
We're... connected in our hearts, not down here.
-Cut it out! Sounds fishy.
How do you think we're connected?
-Money.
Normally... But we're not normal.
