"In 1911 two wealthy British heiresses, Claire and Dora Williamson, came to a sanatorium in the forests of the Pacific Northwest to undergo the revolutionary "fasting treatment" of Dr. Linda Burfield Hazzard. It was supposed to be a holiday for the two sisters. But within a month of arriving at what the locals called Starvation Heights, the women were emaciated shadows of their former selves, waiting for death. They were not the first victims of Linda Hazzard, a quack doctor of extraordinary evil and greed who would stop an nothing short of murder to achieve her ambitions. As their jewelry disappeared and forged bank drafts began transferring their wealth to Hazzard's accounts, Dora Williamson sent a last desperate plea to a friend in Australia, begging her to save them from the brutal treatments and lonely isolation of Starvation Heights ... one of the most unusual and disturbing criminal cases in American history."--Back cover.

Very interesting story but way too long. I skimmed through the last third of the book. But I would still recommend it.

Dr. Linda Hazzard promised to help women lose weight- little did they know that they would lose their lives and money too!
True story.

I dreaded going to bed because I knew I was going to get caught up again in this excellent/awful story. The main characters are vividly described and eerily familiar - the arguments for and against "natural" healing resonate even today. The story is riveting - I did further online research afterward and thoroughly enjoyed and dreaded this book.

Really really scary. Dr. Hazzard is incredibly insane, and gets away with murder over and over again. This is a true story and if you ever visit Olalla WA, you can see what's left of her domain. She is a true serial killer and Gregg describes the scene in Olalla so clearly you think you are there, but wish you weren't! SO good!
