I completely DISAGREE with many of the other comments posted. This is the kind of film you expect from Steve McQueen who not only directed, but co-wrote the script. Viola's performance is remarkable as are her co-stars. I found the story engaging and extremely well paced. Acting and directing superb, and the twist ending is a nice surprise!

In my humble opinion I feel its uncommon to come across a story about widows who attempt a dangerous robbery or any sort of crime, Colin Farrell delivers as does the rest of the cast, Robert Duval included. And while NOT a fan of violence, McQueen managed use a light hand with it, unlike most action films where its showcased in place of a real story. Highly recommended for those that appreciate top tier film making, award winning acting and direction.

did not watch

A great idea executed rather poorly. It's slow, flat, and more than a bit dull. It has some cool moments and a few twists but, in the end, it's a letdown. Re-edit it and lose at least 20 minutes and you might have a better movie. Not bad, just good. Kinda. Maybe.

Looking forward to seeing this for the second time. I thought it was fast-paced, smart, surprising & loved the ladies.

A group of unlikable characters caught in a vicious circle is the plot line in this contemporary thriller. Good cast doing what they can to redeem a very cynical film.

Very disappointed with this movie considering the big name actors involved. I just don't get why there is so much foul language and debauchery in today's productions - it merely takes away from an actor's credibility.

All star cast but it was so boring. The characters were also very unlikable. Viola Davis is hit or miss. In this she was miscast as a wealthy widow suddenly cash poor trying to get her dead husband's partners' widows to pull off a robbery with her. None of these women are strong women and the husbands were monsters. Liam Neeson must have IRS troubles. I can't figure out why he'd be in this. It was more of a cameo but they headlined with his name. :-0

Not enough violence or action. The story is a little dull as well. However, at the end there was a very big twist and the bad guys truly got theirs. Bring a whole other meaning of greed and putting too much trust into someone. I did not hate watching it but I also found it dragged out during points and boring in others.

It would be easy to mistake this movie for the usual action dribble until you see that it's based on a book by Lydia LaPlante (Prime Suspect) and has as one of its contributors Gillian Flynn. It's classed as an action film but not really that much action - a couple of robbery sequences.. But it's really a character film about 3 women who are left as widows when their husbands/boyfriends are killed in a robbery gone bad. Ending left a little to be desired - just too man loose ends - but overall worth watching.

What a disappointing drinble.

Some quotes in IMDb. These are focused on Chicago politics:

Most people don't know what an alderman does... including a fair number of aldermen. It comes from the Old English, meaning "older man." When I was a younger man, Facebook... Back then, a face was something you tried never to forget.
The Mulligans have run the 18th ward for 60 years. My grandfather, my father. These days it's all about name recognition.
Nepotism isn't illegal. It's actually celebrated. This is Chicago.
You know how many shootings happened in this city last weekend alone?
Thirty-four! These people are killing each other! This is not where I wanna raise my children.
What are you gonna do? Work in a bank? Take the train downtown, punch a clock? This is your life! This is our life. It's what we do. Everyone has a fxcking sob story, most of them better than yours. So, if the idea is to be mayor one day, you'd better man the fuck up!

More on Chicago:

Alderman of this ward makes a $104,000 a year. ... But then you add in the juice, right? He gives his friend a contract for a new building, gets a kickback. Gives his brother a contract for construction. Hell, he give his mama a contract for construction. That man owns a piece of every fucking thing. The only people coming after him, they got cameras and microphones. People coming after us with guns.
I'm a proud sixth generation Chicagoan. We laugh louder, we work harder, we sleep to the rattle of the "L" train.
I always said he should burn in hell. But, hey, Chicago'll do.
Mom, you always say a gun is a girl's best friend.
Look around you. It's like Custer's Last Stand. It's kill or be killed. Now, listen to me, son. Listen, we made this city. We're not having it taken away from us
by people who come here illegally... or by people who can't stop, you know...
making babies. That means staying in power... at all costs. You got that?
