A nobleman's daughter with magic in her blood. An empire built on the dreams of enslaved gods. Empire of Sand is Tasha Suri's captivating, Mughal India-inspired debut fantasy. The Amrithi are outcasts; nomads descended of desert spirits, they are coveted and persecuted throughout the Empire for the power in their blood. Mehr is the illegitimate daughter of an imperial governor and an exiled Amrithi mother she can barely remember, but whose face and magic she has inherited. When Mehr's power comes to the attention of the Emperor's most feared mystics, she must use every ounce of will, subtlety, and power she possesses to resist their cruel agenda - and should she fail, the gods themselves may awaken seeking vengeance.

I have so many feelings about Empire of Sand, I'm not even sure where to start gushing.

Okay, first--the setting. Tasha Suri's Mughal-inspired fantasy world is not only stunningly beautiful, but it's also complex in a way that all too many fantasy settings aren't. The cultures that Suri created feel *real* and they add fascinating dimensions to her already-excellent characters. Speaking of which...

Mehr was an unusual but amazing protagonist. She's not your typical "strong female character" in that she's no warrior, but her strength of will and unshakeable moral core makes her easy to love. And then there's the love interest--totally dreamy, but the absolute opposite of the pervasive alpha male stereotype.

Lastly, Empire of Sand is a book about choice. We may not have control over every aspect of our lives, but it's our choices in tough situations that show us who we really are. I think that's an amazing theme and made even the darkest parts of this book shine with a peculiar light.

Long story short: if you love epic fantasy, Empire of Sand is one of the best. Check it out today! --Lizzie (for more of Lizzie's suggestions, follow WoodneathLizzie)

I devoured this book, everything about it was fantastic. From the rich descriptions of the desert and mystical spirits, to the intriguing main character and her journey of growth, I was completely captivated. The story was gut-wrenching and tender by turns. The writing was beautiful and the world building was inventive and it bears mentioning that the author did a lot of research on the Mughal empire to inspire her world. One of the aspects that I find particularly refreshing about this book is how much Mehr loved her heritage and culture, I think it's empowering.

Excellent Asian-inspired fantasy. This author is very good, and may get even better. A series to watch.

I. Loved. This. Fabulous, rich setting and a heroine to root for. This isn't a story about going off to become a fighter, but it is one about tapping into deep resilience and not losing sight of who you are--and what you value--in the face of oppression. Add in a dash of romance, and it's just a wonderful story.

A thrilling and powerful South-Asian-inspired fantasy novel about a young woman with hidden magic in her blood. Rich world, fully-developed characters with action and a bit of romance - this works as a standalone, but left me wanting more from this world. A 2018 standout.
