Based on author David Grann's nonfiction bestseller, The Lost City of Z tells the incredible true story of British explorer Percy Fawcett (Charlie Hunnam), who journeys into the Amazon at the dawn of the 20th century and discovers evidence of a previously unknown, advanced civilization that may have once inhabited the region. Despite being ridiculed by the scientific establishment who regard indigenous populations as "savages," the determined Fawcett - supported by his devoted wife (Sienna Miller), son (Tom Holland) and aide-de-camp (Robert Pattinson) - returns time and again to his beloved jungle in an attempt to prove his case, culminating in his mysterious disappearance in 1925. An epically scaled tale of courage and passion, told in writer/director James Gray's classic filmmaking style, The Lost City of Z is a stirring tribute to the exploratory spirit and a conflicted adventurer driven to the verge of obsession.

One can see why a filmmaker would be taken by this tale and want to bring it to the screen. Perhaps David Lean could have done it; but James Gray, the director and writer of this attempt, definitely could not. The players are generally up to it, but they are saddled with dialogue that is a serial embarrassment. There are decent scenes, to be sure, but the whole is unconvincing, long and and tedious. Sole redeeming factor: we get to look at Sienna Miller's extraordinarily lovely face from time to time.

This type of movie deserves a wide audience for the simple fact that it is based on real events. So many scenes send your senses reeling for a multitude of reasons based on emotion. For me, one big juxtaposition is calling the old world (Europe) civilized in one scene and in the next they are at war killing with a gas. There are many lessons in this movie that I will watch again in time.

Save your time. I managed to watch this "sleeper" of a film from beginning to end, in some silly hope that I would be gifted with something remarkable. I won't spoil anything suffice to say that the toast remained burnt and flavourless throughout. In other words, if you fell asleep you should not have any regrets upon your awakening.

Based on a true story? While exploring the uncharted territory of Brazil early in the 20th century 2 explorers encounter an opera in progress in the jungle. That's when I ejected the DVD. There may have been something interesting going on but I found this to be so unbelievable that I did not waste my time with this movie.

Interesting true story of a determined explorer in quest of finding an old amazon civilization. with the long suffering of his wife who had to raise their children by herself. You wander what really happened to him and his son ????? worth it to watch.

Written and directed by James Gray in 2016 based on the 2009 book of the same name by David Grann, this American docudrama depicts the real events surrounding the British explorer Percy Fawcett, who explored Bolivia-Amazonia and made several attempts to find a supposed ancient lost city in the Amazon.
If you're an adventure-oriented person, you should be able to enjoy this film to the hilt.

These are the most Americanized Britons one is ever likely to encounter, thanks to a US novelist aided and abetted by a US writer/director.

I rather liked this 140 minute film, of this man's quest to find proof of an advanced civilization, while his faithful wife endured many years of having to raise their children alone. This film condensed his travels and adventures between 1906 to 1925 into a rather nicely packaged adventure film. He was portrayed as being more "open minded" to liberal than most of the current Englishmen of the time.
This film was based upon David Grann's, 2009 book of the same name, which describes the events and findings in further detail. The Special Features goes on to say that they director was able to look at Percy Fawcett's personal ledgers, that was still in the granddaughter's possession.
Good script (within the time that was allowed), good acting and interesting story. Actor Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy; Crimson Peak; Pacific Rim), played Percy Fawcett; Robert Pattinson (Twilight Saga series); and Sienna Miller gave fine supporting roles.

Dark, dismal, slow moving with very brief periods of action. I wouldn't want to watch this very long movie a second time.
