I am a bit disappointed in ‘California Girls’, starting with the light breezy cover which completely misrepresents the story. I have to wonder if whomever chose the cover actually read the book.
I truly dislike every major character in ‘California Girls’ (including their awful parents!), with the exception of Daniel and Rochelle. I understand the 'girls' needed flaws to grow, but their voices were discordant, unlikable and repetitive. I alternately wanted to scream at them to either 'grow a pair' or 'suck it up, buttercup', just stop with the angst and whining which far outpaced the plot.
‘California Girls’ is missing the depth of emotions Susan Mallery captured so well in ‘Sisters Like Us’ and almost feels like a gumbo of leftover characters and their stories not needed in other works which were thrown together as a family, (one in which I would not like to be a member), to make a book.
Susan Mallery is so much better than California Girls.
A low and generous 3.5 stars
This is a great summer read. The characters are likeable and it is an easy, breezy read for the beach.
Susan Mallory usually writes more positive stories. I found this one depressing.
The author, Ms. Mallery, evidently has some great unresolved differences with either her own mother or her own mother-in-law. Witness the quite unsympathetic mother figures in lots of her stories, e.g. Dominique Guerin, Mae Stryker, and even pushy, though more likeable, Denise Hendrix in the Fools Gold series, the mother in "Daughters of the Bride". However, she's reached a new level of awfulness in the mother in "California Girls". I just wanted to kick the everlovin' stuffing out of this self-absorbed creature, who ended up at the end of the story with WAY much better than she deserved. No wonder her daughters ended up damaged. Not a particularly enjoyable read.
Fascinating story, great read and an insight into family, their differences, how the react to the situations they encounter.
