A closely observed portrait of Agnes, who has reached her early 40s without ever venturing far from home, family or the tight-knit immigrant community in which she was raised by her widowed father. That begins to change in a quietly dramatic fashion when Agnes receives a jigsaw puzzle as a birthday gift and experiences the heady thrill of not only doing something she enjoys, but being very, very good at it.

I enjoyed the actors and the developing of the Agnes (Kelly MacDonald) self-worth.

Unusual movie but I quite enjoyed it. I'm sure it's right up my daughter's sleeve.

Poignant - the story and the characters. The ending is a pleasant surprise.
Kelly MacDonald plays her role perfectly. Irrfan Khan is his handsome sensuous self. If you enjoy him in this move watch Lunch Box.

There are so few good movies with women main characters over 40. This is definitely one of them. Agnes (Kelly Macdonald) undergoes midlife transformation from put-upon home-maker to realization of her own self worth and abilities. I especially like the ending that avoids following typical movie plot formula. Watch this instead of the newest Diane Keaton fluff. You'll be glad you did.

This is a story that pretty much every woman (and probably man) comes to at roughly this age..40 something. It is a time of reckoning. Often called midlife crisis. Can you really expect 18-20 year olds to make a partner for LIFE choice? Nature ruled that decision. The question is at midlife are you wanting to stay in the track or strike out. No right or wrong answer but a tough decision to make.

My partner and I really liked this film. Was far more introspective and had more depth than we had thought it would, following a women getting to know herself. Well written by Polly Mann, Oren Moverman, and based on the Argentinian film -"Rompecabezas" - written by Natalie Smirnoff. Well directed by Marc Turtletaub (Little Miss Sunshine: 2006; Safety Not Guaranteed: 2012; Loving: 2016), and acted by Kelly Macdonald (Trainspotting: 1996; Nanny McPhee: 2005; No Country For Old Men: 2007; Brave: 2012; T2: Trainspotting: 2017; Ralph Breaks the Internet: 2018; Holmes & Watson: 2018), David Denman (Big Fish: 2008; The Gift: 2015; Logan Lucky: 2017), Irrfan Khan (Slumdog Millionaire: 2008; Life of Pi: 2012; Jurrasic World: 2015; Blackmail: 2018), and Bubba Weiler (The Ranger: 2018).
Special Features on this DVD has short interviews with some of the cast and director.

20 minutes of my life I can never recoup... Too many unexplained aspects, for one thing. One of those movies where I can predict dialogue, plot turns, camera angles. Like a story I've seen in film 100 times before. Not even interested to see the ending. I'd rather do my laundry.

If you want a movie that ties up the ending with a bow, this isn't for you. I liked that I continued to think about this movie, and discussed it as well. It is a quiet, slow playing movie, and doesn't go for the Hollywood ending. It probably actually plays out a little more the way life does. Her husband is the "boss" of the household, but not cartoonishly so or in a way that is over the top hate-able. The relationship that forms with the other man isn't necessarily going to "save" her. And neither will the puzzles. It's actually not about the puzzles at all except that she is puzzling out her own life (listen for the metaphors). I thought she brought a quiet and understated strength to the role, which worked for the movie. Not flawless (had a hard time with the sons) and it wasn't perfect, but thought it was better than some of the reviews I read.
