Heiskell's cookbook focuses on portable foods that are well-tested and well-loved by her family and friends in the Mississippi delta. From the Wednesday night church potluck to the family with a new baby to football tailgate parties, her recipes are accessible and affordable. She doesn't apologize for using convenience foods (even using the brand names in her recipes) and breaks the time needed for each recipe into "hands on" time and total time. Heiskell often gives the history behind her recipes which results in some amusing stories. I especially liked the one about the Garlic Cheese Grits Souffle as most of us have experienced the loss of a key ingredient when the manufacturer discontinues the product. As the author wrote, "Why, Kraft, why?"

I was intrigued by the great title but disappointed by the content. Too many of the recipes contain processed food ingredients. For example, many of the cake recipes use boxed cake mixes. That is just something I would like to avoid.
