Totally agree with burroak. If you are interested in what happened at Dunkirk, look up the PBS Frontline episode. Excellent background and narration. You'll know far more about the Dunkirk disaster than you'll learn in this movie.

A story well worth telling but this movie does a poor job telling it. No background, no narration of what's happening, no character to get invested in. Even disliked the soundtrack. I hope another movie maker gives this story a try because this one is a lost cause.

yesterday watched the fine flick on premium cable, looking next for extras. but BR has no bonus / extended content!? no thanks, rather wait for a non-rental version.
--------------
flash update, just noticed library's lower quality dvd flavor (not BR) has the 2nd disk WITH extras. will get that instead.

A true story brought back to light. Not sure why and how soldiers were trapped below deck on the rescue ship and if or how they escaped. Not sure why RAF pilots wore oxygen masks for low level dog fights. Was hard to read lips. Limey lingo hard to understand. Looking forward to seeing Churchill's Darkest Hour DVD.

Very disapointing on so many levels. However the cinematography at least was exceptional.

This was an amazing movie in terms of cinematography and musically - it is just in the character development that it tanks for me. Even a timeline along the bottom would have really helped the viewer get a sense of when this was occuring and when the director was turning the clock back again. Basically it seems like it is the same period of time (48hrs?) shown from 4-5 different perspectives.

Very disappointed in this film. After watching “The Darkest Hour”, I had high hopes this film would add more to the story. If I had not watched “The Darkest Hour” I don’t think I would have the slightest idea what was going on in this film. Two much jumping around and little emphasis on the actual civilian rescue effort.

A cool movie to watch having just watched 'Darkest Hour.' Even more time compression, but cut in a way I found somewhat confusing. How many times did the one German plane get shot down, anyway? But, high marks for 'fog of war' portrayal, the absurdity of things, and the moral complexities. Mark Rylance was, I thought, particularly effective, in an understated way. Definitely worth a watch.

Blue Planet minus whales, rapturous music and photography plus a couple of spitfires and torpedoes. Big nothing burger.

He didn't kill anyone. He was just looking for a way off the sand, like the rest of us.
===
Where's the bloody air force?
-The navy's requisitioned her.
===
No French soldiers. No French soldiers. No. No, no French. English only. English only past this point. No. It's a British ship. No, you have your own ships.
===
Dunkirk's so far. Why can't they just load at Calais?
-The enemy had something to say about it.
Ah, down here we're sitting ducks.

Colonel, you're gonna have to decide how many more wounded to evacuate. One stretcher takes the space of seven standing men.
===
What about the French?
-Publicly, Churchill's told them, "Bras dessous." Arm in arm, leaving together.
And privately?
-We need our army back.
How many men are they talking about, sir?
-Churchill wants 30,000. Ramsay's hoping we can give him 45.
There are 400,000 men on this beach, sir.
===
He feels safer on deck. You would too if you'd been bombed.
===
What's wrong with your friend?
-He's looking for a quick way out. In case we go down.

===
A bloody frog. A cowardly little queue-jumping frog.

As soon as he pokes his head out, they'll slaughter him.
-Better him than me.
It's not fair.
- Survival's not fair. No, it's shit. It's fear, and it's greed. Fate pushed through the bowels of men.
Shit. He saved our lives.
-And he's about to do it again.
No, don't! Stop!
-Somebody's gotta get off, so the rest of us can live. If you wanna volunteer...
Fxck no. I'm going home. And if this is the price? I'll live with it. But it's wrong.
-Go on!
One man's not going to make enough difference.
-You'd best hope it does, because you'd be volunteering next.
===
You're RAF?
-No. Not me. My brother. He flew Hurricanes. Died third week into the war.
===
Well done. Well done, lads. Well done.
-All we did is survive.
That's enough.

Part 1 of 2 -- Ending voice over of Winston Churchill to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom on 4 June 1940:
"Wars are not won by evacuations. But there was a victory inside this deliverance, which should be noted. Our thankfulness at the escape of our army must not blind us to the fact that what has happened in France and Belgium is a colossal military disaster. We must expect another blow to be struck almost immediately. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France. We shall fight on the seas and oceans. We shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air. We shall defend our island whatever the cost... "

Part 2 of 2 -- Ending voice over of Winston Churchill to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom on 4 June 1940:
"We shall defend our island whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches. We shall fight on the landing grounds. We shall fight in the fields and in the streets. We shall fight in the hills. We shall never surrender. And even if this island or a large part of it were subjugated and staring, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle until, in God's good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old."
