Wielding the Book proved even more difficult than Sefia had expected; the amount of information was so massive and so little of it was what she needed.

This is a word,
and a word is a spell–
a promise to keep
or a secret to tell.

Controlling the word
means the power to frame
how the ages of history
remember your name.

Are you hero or villain?
A savior or spy?
Some titles are lovely.
Some titles are lies.

You can claim who you are
now that you’ve found your voice.
But those who are chosen
will not have a choice.

"What is written comes to pass."

Kelanna is a world in which reading and writing are magic. So all reading and writing have been eliminated, but for a small, secret group who guards it and the one book that tells the history and future of everything. Sefia and Archer have the Book. The Guard wants it back. The Guard wants them back, for they have been foretold as powerful leaders. Sefia and Archer want vengeance for all the ways they have already been damaged by the Guard. The two groups are hunting each other, with the stakes being the ability to write the story of what will come. The ability to determine their own fates.

Both plot and relationships get more intricate and tangled in this second installment of the trilogy. Characters grow, protagonists and others as well. Our knowledge of the world grows. There is no lack of violence, suspense, romance, intrigue, and magic. Focus and purpose are gradually obtained. The groundwork has been laid for the story's finale. This is a worthy middle-of-the-tale read.
