Fast read kinda like a short story. Finished in about 2 hrs. Story line is about robots and what they can be programmed to do.

★½ to ★★ (A few OLD sci-fi ideas thrown together, including the central "killer robots" angle. Writing is plain and sophomoric, none quotable, not even on goodreads.)
From Patterson's web page:
The Dolls are perfect lovers, perfect companions, perfect killers. Investigative reporter Lila Wallace has covered many crimes of passion in 10 years. But nothing will prepare her for the dark secrets of...The Dolls.

I love good short stories that do not take a lot of work to digest, just cause and effect, one or two great twist, unusual people and places like a well done article from The Atlantic Magazine, New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone etc. Better yet, if like "No Middle Name -- The Complete Collected Jack Reacher Short Stories" by Lee Child. So with hope, checked out this from Patterson's so called BookShots (150 sparse pages or fewer) from a print journalist/author Kecia Balm:

James Patterson’s Co-Author Competition Winner

Today, we are thrilled to announce the winner of the James Patterson Co-Author Competition! After receiving the three finalists’ outlines for their book ideas, James chose Kecia Bal from Somerset, PA, as the grand prize winner based on her story idea and outline. Kecia will have an opportunity to co-author a book with James Patterson.

Something to remember having read this book:

There’s the trick. Ask an engineer about his firm’s technology. He held the door open for me.
“He recognizes signs of dishonesty. Little things you do—your face, your body—that you don’t even know you do. That’s where it goes beyond machine learning. This is deep learning, deep neural networks—a mix of hardware and software.” Daniel kept going. “It functions like the neurons in the human brain.”
... while mothers sat on park benches. Most of them looked at their phones. Why would you watch anything besides these children’s faces?

I’m a widely recognized expert in ALICE—artificial linguistic internet computer entity—”
Ball bearings over notched magnetic plates. Impressive design, in itself, but it’s the software architecture that goes inside that’s most stunning.
... she stole glances, fascinated by their faces. They all were so different, the features less symmetrical than hers, but those imperfections told some story,
“This feeling is worth everything. I know what it feels like to have someone care about me.”
