Excellent mystery - interweaves the past and present well. Recommend. Kristi & Abby Tabby p.s. fun to listen to with the Australian dialect.

Oh wow, that was a doozy! I can see why it was a top pick from 2017. It is a suspenseful mystery that keeps you twisting and turning all the way through.

Aaron Faulk, Federal Investigator has been called from Melbourne back to his hometown to attend the funeral of his childhood best friend Luke, and his family. While not there in an official capacity, Luke's parents implore him to work with the local sheriff to investigate the death which has been already ruled a murder/suicide. Jane Harper uses language magnificently to transport us to a rural Australian town suffering under an oppressive drought and intrusive murder investigation which ratchets up the tension almost palpably. Red herrings are employed with such skill that even the most well-read mystery lovers will have a hard time figuring out who done-it

A note to audio-book (CD) borrowers: I borrowed the CD set which states it is 8 discs. Upon inserting the 8th disc, the narrator informed me it was disc 9. Sure enough, there was a noticeable gap in the story. I borrowed a print copy to verify this comment before placing it here. If you prefer CD format, perhaps borrow the print copy as well to cover the gap.

It is a good story by a great new author. The narrator uses a strong Aussie accent which may take a little time to become accustomed to.

Get ready, this book's descriptive narrative will leave you feeling waves of heat, the mystery will chill your bones and the action will quicken your heart. This is an Outback story you can't miss.

I felt drawn into the story by the texture given to the characters and their never ending struggle to survive, and stay sane, in a parched and harsh Australian landscape. However it jumped around a lot which made it hard to follow and it should have ended about fifty pages earlier.

Slow and steady paced but page turning crime mystery. Beautiful descriptive writing and great Aussie accented narration. The setting is a small town in the harsh drought riddled outback. Tensions in the town run as high as the oppressive heat.
I highly recommend.

Death rarely changes how we feel about someone. Heightens it, more often than not.
