Often called the greatest novel ever written, War and peace is at once an epic of the Napoleonic wars, a philosophical study, and a celebration of the Russian spirit. Tolstoy's literary genius is clearly seen in the multitude of fully realized and memorable characters.

I was expecting this classic and well known novel to be weighted much more about war and politics than it was. I found it equally a study of Tsarist society, morals, meaning in life, social position and love. I enjoyed learning the about history of this time (1805-1820) and the French Invasion of Russia.
After reading it twice, I finally got my head around most of the characters and the stories about them were well plotted and heart wrenching. War and Peace is long but worth it. It highlights how the peoples of a country suffer due to the decisions of their own leaders.
I also watched the recent BBC mini series which was an excellent adaptation of the book.
