This film requires you to pay attention! If you do, you'll be rewarded because you really get the nuances in the relationships. Good acting, especially by Richard Gere, who plays an unusual type here. We liked the unusual split-screen scenes during some of the phone conversations too. If you require lots of action to stay awake, this film is not for you.

Watched the film without knowing anything more about the film other than the description. Found the characters very unlikable, the split-screen trick annoying and the plot uninteresting until the last 30 minutes. So, looked around to see why it garnered such high acclaim and found in wiki that “Richard Gere was praised by both Variety and The Guardian for his "strong performance" portraying a "Court Jew" archetype.” Okay, that explained the strange characters in high finance but the rest of the film is monotonous and uninspiring.

Terrible. Shows that he will now try to act in any movie regardless of how bad it is.

I am a Richard Gere fan, but, this wasn't my cup of tea. Shut it off before it bored me to death.

I do like Richard Gere but it was so painful to watch. I had to pause to continue. Glad I did go
to the movie house would have had to request a refund.

I adored this movie. Why I love this movie: directed by Joseph Cedar who also made Footnote. Richard Gere gives an amazing nuanced performance. His last few movies have been terrific: Arbitrage, Time Out of Mind). He is Norman, an amoral conniver, a hustler in the New York way, but at the same time, we really root for him. We see into his big heart, in my opinion. Terrific cast: Lior Ashkenazi (see A Late Marriage, Walk on Water), Steve Buscemi (as a rabbi no less!), Michael Sheen and Charlotte Gainsbourg. The movie has a wonderful energy and unpredictability. Juxtapositions of characters when least expected. In the special features Gere and Cedar talk about our inner Normans. Isn't he lurking somewhere in all of us?

Well, I couldn't do it. Watched a half hour, and didn't get it. It was boring too. I got it because I like Richard Gere, but I thought this one was a stinker.

Strange but interesting film for "grown ups" which will reward you with wonderful acting and a complex plot that requires your careful attention. Richard Gere is terrific in this dramatic role, far removed from his "Pretty Woman" matinee idol look. Great supporting cast.

Only one single quote at IMDb :
Norman Oppenheimer: There are two kinds of moguls: First kind is like a big ocean liner ship. Makes a lot of waves, a lot of noise, everybody sees it coming from miles away. Like Jo Wilf. I think your boss, Minister Maor, is actually... in his close circle of friends. of course. And then there is Arthur. Well, Arthur is more like a nuclear submarine. he's quiet, he's fast, he's young. Extremely sophisticated.

How do you say goral? Fate. Fate. I feel fate. If God put me here, he must have had a good reason. Now, I'm not free to run away from this job, but to be honest, no single human being can really claim to be big enough for this job either.

History is full of anonymous heroes, Norman. The day I walk up to that podium to sign the peace treaty, you will see a very specific expression on my face. Know that I will be thinking of you...

Stomp on a glass at wedding per film:
Tradition explains the act of breaking the glass reminds us to turn our hearts towards the city of Jerusalem. In which the ultimate peace shall be granted to the world.

vs the explanation in wiki:
The primary reason is that joy must always be tempered.[25] This is based on two accounts in the Talmud of rabbis who, upon seeing that their son's wedding celebration was getting out of hand, broke a vessel – in the second case a glass – to calm things down. Another explanation is that it is a reminder that despite the joy, Jews still mourn the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem.
