This book starts out Jane Eyre and ends Sweeney Todd.

An interesting plot carefully scripted. I particularly enjoyed the author's writing technique.

Goddamn, this book.

I was afraid of what I might get to read with that blurb but it was more than I thought. You know when something terrible's happening and you shouldn't look but you do anyway? That's what this book is like.

And now I know why women were always found to commit crimes of passion. Any woman repressed and isolated as Anne had been, any woman with two brain cells to rub, would go crazy. Of course, I do not side with our anti-heroine but the first half of the book very nicely shows how an awkward, curious girl can either become brain-dead or demented living in a Georgian society.

That ending with the Jacobite was a nice touch. I wouldn't be surprised if our Anne met a similar, anti-climatic ending.
