In an era of rap music where the actual words are second to catchy beats, J Cole’s 4 Your Eyez Only is a rare and appreciated lyrical masterpiece. The album from “For Whom the Bells Toll” to “4 Your Eyez Only” is a journey from J. Cole’s childhood to his life now. He raps about serious and profound issues including the death of a childhood friend and falling in love and being a new father. Once again, J. Cole does not follow the traditional path of many rappers who focus on wealth. He is relatable and meaningful, not worrying about fame, as he raps about in “Neighbors”. 4 Your Eyez Only gives listeners an insight on the plight of a young J. Cole growing up trying to avoid getting caught up with gangs and finding his own voice. 5 out of 5.

4 Your Eyez Only is J Cole’s latest album and was released near the end of 2016. The album was based off of a story of his friend who died and his own story of life. He is a real lyricist and is a great story teller throughout the whole album. You have to be able to listen to the album fully to understand it as every song is going with each other. Songs such as Immortal and Neighbours show Cole’s great lyrics and rapping ability. He also has very smooth and chill songs such as Deja Vu and Change that are nice to hear from a rapper. This album may not be for everyone in my opinion, however if you’re a big rap/hip hop fan it is a great recommend.

I'll be honest, friends, I am new to J. Cole. This album was a good introduction though. The story that plays out on his tracks is top notch as he tells a comprehensive and compelling confession of a man named "James." In actuality, it is about one of Cole's friends. Usually when artists put this much emotion in their songs something good comes out of it: This album.
