The Girl Before
Book - 2017 | First edition
"In the tradition of The Girl on the Train, The Silent Wife, and Gone Girl comes an enthralling psychological thriller that spins one woman's seemingly good fortune, and another woman's mysterious fate, through a kaleidoscope of duplicity, death, and deception. Please make a list of every possession you consider essential to your life. The request seems odd, even intrusive--and for the two women who answer, the consequences are devastating. EMMA Reeling from a traumatic break-in, Emma wants a new place to live. But none of the apartments she sees are affordable or feel safe. Until One Folgate Street. The house is an architectural masterpiece: a minimalist design of pale stone, plate glass, and soaring ceilings. But there are rules. The enigmatic architect who designed the house retains full control: no books, no throw pillows, no photos or clutter or personal effects of any kind. The space is intended to transform its occupant--and it does. JANE After a personal tragedy, Jane needs a fresh start. When she finds One Folgate Street she is instantly drawn to the space--and to its aloof but seductive creator. Moving in, Jane soon learns about the untimely death of the home's previous tenant, a woman similar to Jane in age and appearance. As Jane tries to untangle truth from lies, she unwittingly follows the same patterns, makes the same choices, crosses paths with the same people, and experiences the same terror, as the girl before. Advance praise for The Girl Before "Dazzling, startling, and above all cunning--a pitch-perfect novel of psychological suspense."--Lee Child "Riveting! One of the most compelling page-turners I've read in years. Twisty, turny, and with an ending not to be missed!"--Lisa Gardner"-- Provided by publisher.

Add a Commentgreat premise for a book and engaging writing quickly drew me in. Though it did veer off and become a little too fifty shades(ish) at times. I’m a little torn by the ending. Though overall, I did enjoy it.
I really enjoyed this book! I kind of stopped reading it for a bit and then decided to pick it back up again and that time around I couldn’t put it down. I was actually pretty shocked at the twist! The ending was kind of confusing to me but overall I quite enjoyed the book.
Delaney's debut sensation is an edge-of-your-seat ride that will have reader's heads spinning with the twists and turns. The concept of a "smart home" -- so brilliantly executed in Folgate Street's depiction -- expertly plays on our fears of losing privacy and control in the one environment where we feel safe: our own home. The Girl Before is a manipulative, engrossing page turner that might appeal to fans of other suspenseful bestsellers.
Really good book!!
I didn't make it past the 64th page...boring and ridiculous. No stars, unless its in the negative...won't be reading another of this authors "works". -5 stars
I was super excited to read this. The story started off well, two characters at different phases of life. Throw in the enigmatic landlord and a stunning eerie house and you have a winner, right? But the deeper you delve into the story, the more predictable it gets. I think the author read fifty shades of grey and gone girl and decided to put out a combination of these books.
It doesn't really work, nothing grabs you and by the end the plot is flimsy and see through.
Two stories centered around this house and its architect made for some interesting drama and narrative style in this book. While it certainly kept me reading, I felt like the reveals near the end was predictable and found it difficult to connect to any of the flawed characters.
Fun and easy read I couldn't put it down lots of twists and turns... read it in a day... not the best book I've ever read, but entertaining :)

Would you take a great deal on an architectural gem of an apartment if there were strange and disquieting strings attached to the deal?
