An informative and entertaining history of the chair illustrated with sketches by the author. This reader would have appreciated a Glossary of Technical Terms such as curule, intarsia, marquetry, scarf, and conchoidal. The author provides end notes but they are difficult to read due to their run-on format. Finally, it would be helpful if the illustrations had been identified in the Index by a page number in italics.
