From Library Staff

This sci-fantastic product of eastern European animation is not merely weird. It's also a violent, scary exhibit of the struggles of fragile people in Lilliputian conflict with the blue, gigantic avatars of an uncontrollable, inexplicable, alien universe. Literal bloodbaths, too. Ick.

Fantastic Planet (1973) is a film by French director René Laloux and is about a race of blue giants that keep humans as pets. It’s fair to say that the flick wasn’t intended for children, but when Americans see a cartoon they inevitably think, “Oh! It’s kid-friendly!” At least, my mom did. She took me to see it when I was six and it still gives me nightmares.

Unusual French sci-fi movie. What if humans were treated as pets by aliens while some escaped human pets became feral? Animation makes the action less horrible and the alien planet lifeforms more bizarre. If you have pets, you may look at how you treat them in a new way.
