I tried to read this with my 6 year old. However, the name calling and the mom zebra kicking the son meant that we had to stop reading it.

When my 2nd grader - who claims he "hates" history - expressed a smidgen of interest in Ancient Rome & gladiators, we picked up this book. It was perfect! It launched a major homeschool unit on the Ancient world for us... we're reading the whole series and using them as a starting place for exploring ancient/classical history. Very high interest!

A very good book. I loved the pictures and how the story had both ancient rome and african animals such as the zebra (called Julius). I also like the different variety of characters in the book. Great book to read very funny action packed adventure with lot's of interesting words and pictures.

Funny and action-packed, this one gives a bit of historical fact mixed with the silly antics of a zebra and his animal pals trying to fight for their freedom against the gladiators of ancient Rome. The illustrations add an extra level of hilarity. A great choice for reluctant readers!
