It's been a year of upheaval, since Bren Cameron's return from space - a year since he and the aiji-dowager, one of his most powerful atevi allies, returned home from their two-year interstellar mission to find the government overthrown and their world in chaos. Now, at last, things on the atevi world seem to be on the right track, and Bren hopes that life may soon become much more tranquil. But something is coming, quietly, stealthily - just the first ominous twinkle of a new star in the heavens.

As the other comment notes, this is Book 17, so if you've made it this far, you know what you're in for. This was a good instalment, as it provided a plot twist hinted at perhaps nearly 20 years ago, as well as an interesting opportunity to tie things back into Cherryh's wider universe. Whether or not things ever go there remains to be seen, but this novel provides for fascinating new directions for events to go.

This is the 17th book in a continuing series. If you've gotten to this point or have read much of Cherryh's other works, you will have observed that 1) the majority of her works involve strong female characters and vulnerable male characters, and 2) over time her works have become decreasingly plot-driven and increasingly about character dynamics. The sparse events in this book span only a few days and the plot twist was obvious a few books ago. Nevertheless, her novels are well-crafted and set in a vast coherent universe.
