"Most people wanted to escape. Get out of their heads. Out of their lives. Stories are the easiest way to do that."
"I’ll strip with you,” Safi offered, grabbing for her shirttails. “If anyone shows up”—the shirt slid over her face, muffled her words—“I’ll dance around and distract them."
"It wasn’t freedom she wanted. It was belief in something—a prize big enough to run for and to fight for and to keep on reaching toward no matter what."

She has kept her truthwitch abilities a secret knowing that she could either become a pawn in political schemes or be killed to prevent others from access to her power. Her Threadsister and closest friend, Iseult, is a threadwitch who can see people’s emotional ties. Bound by friendship and trained for battle Safiya and Iseult find themselves thrust into the middle of plans that could destroy a 20 year truce and which would plunge their world into greater darkness than the Great War. Pursued by a bloodwitch assassin, an emperor’s agent, and leaders seeking Safiya’s powers the two flee for safety on the ship of a prince motivated by a desperate desire to save his land and his people from suffering.
