Tuur and Lambert are best friends in a Nazi-occupied Dutch village who pass their days playing soldiers and exploring local caves, mimicking a war that seems far removed from their everyday life. When Maartje joins their class, the young girl immediately stands out as different from her classmates. Yet the boys embrace their new friend, forming a unique bond based on shared adventures, secrets and mischief. Ultimately, the realities of war even find them.

The short film in the special sections titled, "When It's Time to Let Go", was of interest to local events occurring at this time. They are known as the 'Caregivers', which is an oxymoron because the last thing they care about are their subjects, unless it is to use them to pad their research and development pockets. They are exploiting the poor, disabled and elderly under the guise of 'caring' for them. They have access to their personal property and financial information which they exploit for their own personal gain paid for as 'Caregivers' by funding from the State of Washington. Laws are applied like bill 1450 that legalizes spying on citizens and the same politicians that approved this bill also approve US Patent research restrictions. The poor, elderly and handicapped are being exploited to fast track Pharma drugs, remote control experiments and technology development. Forced to participate in inappropriate medicaid programs that are used to seize personal property in 'recovery' upon their death in order to pay for the unnecessary salaried of the 'Caregivers'.

A war occupation seen from the point of view of 3 twelve year olds. There is an interesting plot but just as interesting is the dynamics of the Dutch citizens--some in secret resisted, while others collaborated for their own self interest. The kids often protected by not knowing about resistance, but ganging up on one another. Great cinematography and acting.

What a wonderful sweet movie. Nice to see young kids playing young kids in a believable manner. A movie for all ages.
