Across the realms of civic and private enterprise alike, bureaucracies vitally impact our security, freedoms, and everyday life. With so much at stake, competence, efficiency, and fiscal prudence are essential, yet Americans know these institutions fall short. Many despair that they are too big and too hard to reform. Robert Gates disagrees. Having led change successfully at three monumental organizations -- the CIA, Texas A&M University, and the Department of Defense -- he offers an insider's look at how major bureaus, organizations, and companies can be transformed. Gates includes advice on tailoring reform to the operative culture (we see how Gates worked within the system to increase diversity at Texas A&M); effecting change within committees; engaging the power of compromise ("In the real world of bureaucratic institutions, you almost never get all you want when you want it"); and listening and responding to your team.

[Update 1/2017: Yup, Gates was SecDef when the Chinese military hackers penetrated at will the Pentagon and defense contractors, stealing the plans for the Joint Strike Fighter, the Aegis naval system, military personnel records, and lord only knows what else! Bob Gates, National Security Disaster!!!!!]
Oh wow! Gates as Mr. Leadership! Uh-rah! Or, wasn't he SecDef when that Utah military facility // accidentally \\ shipped out live Athrax samples over a ten-year period!
Bravo, Mr. Leadership!
Wasn't he SecDef when a Hellfire missile was // accidentally \\ shipped to Cuba?
Bravo, Mr. Leadership!
I forget, was he the SecDef when those nukes were // accidentally \\ shipped in an unsecure fashion? [I could be mistaken on that one, since all the mistakes tend to overlap?]
Yup, Mr. Leadership. . . .
During the time Rumsfeld and Gates were in the SecDef position, $7 trillion in DoD funds went missing - - now that's leadership!
[Kind of reminds one of that Army general who wrote the book bragging about his training of the Iraq and Afghanistani armies - - great job on that one, ISIS really appreciated your training, bubba!]
I suspect one could have predicted that Gates would have a // passion for leadership \\ by his habit of boiling cats while attending high school?
