This book is for adults. It has a ridiculous amount of sexual content. Know that going in, and you'll be fine. We follow Merry, or Princess Meredith, who is the heir to the throne in the Faerie Unseelie Court. The book is a bit all over the place, but it takes place in mostly LA and St. Louis. I'm going to jump right in and say that the writing is pretty terrible. It suffers desperately from bad editing. There are unnecessary sentences, run-on sentences, word repetition, confusing descriptions, and super cringy word choices. A prime example is this gem, found about halfway through the book, "I must needs open the lock." Another example, about 50 pages in, we have this, "I'd always thought Teresa, though she'd never traveled further south than Mexico, would have made an excellent Southern Belle." What. The. Hell. Does that mean. What's really frustrating is the characters are very well fleshed out (pardon my pun) and the world-building was spot on for what was needed for the story. It just seems like Hamilton desperately needed someone to actually READ and EDIT her work.
There were some slow parts, mainly in the beginning, but once the story really got rolling, I was sucked into the world and just wanted to continue reading. I love how comfortable Meredith is with her sexuality- she is happy with who she is, loves herself and is happy to make others happy, and really enjoys having sex. This is a huge departure from all the YA I've been reading lately, and it is entirely refreshing. It is revealed that she's descended from 5 fertility gods, so that could be part of it too. The book really reads like a fanfic or personal fantasy for the second half- her Aunt, the Queen, allowing her to have sex with any of the previously celibate Fae that make up her personal guard with the express purpose of getting her pregnant. Yeah, it's a little cheesy, and yeah, we're going to roll with it anyways. As long as you don't take this book or author too seriously and enjoy yourself, you're going to have a great time. My star rating is purely based on the fact that I got invested in the world, enjoyed myself, and kept turning the pages. It's no Shakespeare. But sometimes, you need a little guilty pleasure- and this is exactly that.

Sex, romance, drama, fantasy, and the constant threat of someone trying to kill Merry. Super good book and series!

A nice break from the train-wreck that Anita Blake is becoming. This series is faster paced, and at least justifies the volume of sex so that it doesn't grate on you and stop the story. Worth picking up.

I have followed the Anita Blake series for awhile and I am glad that I've now started this one as well. It's weird because you get a really good introduction to a series of characters at the beginning of the book that just disappear during the rest of it... but the story does suck you in. The characters from the agency will be back in next book, can't wait to see how this develops.

This book started out a little much - too much was happening too fast and it seemed a little ridiculous. However, it grew on me immensely, and I came to love it by the end. Can't wait to read the next one!
