I found this book by accident and ended up thoroughly enjoying it. With its quirky characters, bizarre situations, and an omniscient author/narrator who occasionally stops the action to explain certain plot points, it feels like a good Coen Brothers movie. I will definitely plan to read more books by this author.

I pulled this off the shelf because of the title and cover; it did not disappoint. As with a Carl Hiaasen novel there are happily dysfunctional characters and wacky plot developments. Publishers Weekly also sees Elmore Leonard here, nasty, inept criminals and great dialog. There are lots of chuckles and moments of delicious hilarity. I especially enjoyed the detectives intent on psyching each-other out with premeditated mind games and the malapropisms of the perhaps autistic savant. The story is told by an unknown narrator who shares his thoughts with the reader.

It took a little while to get used to the characters, but in the end I was laughing so hard that I was crying.
