Lovely illustrated story that challenges to have the courage to let go . And to grow .

Little tree is growing happily with a group of other trees. They are green together, and change colors in the fall together. Then the other trees begin to drop their leaves. Little Tree clings tight to his leaves, scared of what will happen if he lets them go. In the spring the other trees grow new green leaves, and get taller, but Little tree continues to hold tight to his first leaves, even though they are brown. Fall comes again and the forest animals encourage Little Tree to drop his leaves, but he continues to hug them tight. After some time Little Tree no longer feel the sunlight-all the other trees have grown tall, and the animals are way up high in their branches. Winter comes and Little Tree remembers when all the other trees were small. He then lets go of his leaves, and feels the cold of winter. The season's change, and Little Tree begins to grow, produces new leaves, and lets them fall in autumn, till he is a tall as his friends.

Author of the Otis series, this is a sweet story with wonderful illustrations. I love how the text is simple, and does over complicate the story. This would be a great story to share with groups, or to make a flannel board of.

Excellent message about being flexible

Teach your children about the changing seasons and how things grow with this sweet book about a tree who isn't ready for change. Talk to your children about all of the animals who come to see him as the seasons change and encourage them to look for trees both young and old in nature. This would be great for kids before a camping trip.

Little Tree loves his leaves so much that doesn't want to drop them in the autumn. Why should he? He's happy as he is. Ignoring the advice of the woodland creatures, Little Tree holds tight for season after season…until he realizes that the other trees have grown tall without him. Can he find the courage to let go? Loren Long's clean-lined illustrations are uncluttered yet eye-catching; paired with the simple text, they create an "understated and inviting" (Booklist) tone that children won't be able to resist. Those looking for a similar story with a very different style of illustration may also enjoy Carin Berger's The Little Yellow Leaf. Picture books newsletter November 2015
