It's like one of Peter Mayle's mysteries set in France, but with an even more bumbling protagonist than usual. It's perfect for the foodies, and the dry humor and nonsense is sorta endearing once you get used to it. It's an exercise in the silly, made extravagantly dramatic due to our chubby, alcoholic lead's well-intentioned but entirely useless meandering through a slightly boggy plot. The point is to read about fine locations and finer wines, but I do need a little character development with my scenery.
