Brillant. A must read for current fans of Low or Black Science.

That was interesting. We have two stories going on here: one in our present and another several centuries into our future. One thing is for sure, mermaids have never been scarier.

In our contemporary story disgraced marine biologist Lee Archer is recruited to a shady project. At first it's something to do with tracing the origins of a certain noise. When she arrives she finds out there is far more to that assignment. It basically turns into underwater "Alien" before it ends and we're into our future story following a woman named Leeward in a post apocalyptic sort of world who is listening for signals on "the Ear". The pay off at the end is rather interesting but I did find the journey a little shaky at points. I was really invested in the contemporary story though and I recommend this based on that alone.
