A detailed account of an intriguing moment in history-- the 1974 Turkish attack of Cyprus, a Mediterranean island occupied uneasily by both Turkish and Greek Cypriots, but treated as a resort getaway by others. Underlying political hostility vaguely masked by luxury escapism lured me into this story-- and the fact that the resort city of Famagusta (the setting) is now abandoned and hidden behind barbed wire . As a historical novel that fleshes out this story, this book succeeds. However, if you need likable characters to bring your stories to life, this book might falter on that measure.
