This is in Russian. The entire movie seems so negative.

It's not a comfort to know that Russian society is as lost and corrupted as our own, but what elevates the bleakness of this film is the breadth of its vision. What filmmaker Zvyagintsev gives us here is a magisterially misanthropic view of human endeavor. One might call it nihilistic except that Zvyagintsev obviously believes in nature. It's just that not even the sublimity of nature stands a chance against man's duplicity. So we should chalk up LEVIATHAN as yet another dystopia. All we seem to be able to manage are dystopias.

Well acted, beautiful scenery, sad but realistic story - the little guy usually doesn't win, life can be messy & painful, etc.

I would not recommend this movie. Much of the lighting in the movie was lacking. Even with my blinds closed, I had trouble seeing the actors at times. The ending was about as worse as it can get. All though the movie I was expecting some kind of improvement, but it never happened. I guess if you want to be depressed, watch it, but beware of this movie if you want a happy ending.

A fiercely dark, but amazingly entertaining film. Visibly stunning throughout, it addresses the fears, hopes and fate of people in a remote Russian village and the interplay of corrupting power, genuine evil and the devastating impact of the interplay of state, church, and society on individuals and families.

Bleak film with solid acting and stunning cinematography. A dose of reality.

It's a good film about the rot setting in, in a small town- Vancouverites should be able to see the parallels with their own town quite easily.

Heartbreaking story of high-ranking corruption and "the little guy" trying to fight it.

Vasiliy (priest) to Kolya: "Can you pull in Leviathan with a fishhook or tie down its tongue with a rope? Will it keep begging you for mercy? Will it speak to you with gentle words? Nothing on earth is its equal. It is king over all that are proud."
Dad... Will you ever stop drinking?
-I will. I'm quitting tomorrow.
Where there's power, there's might. If you hold power in your territory, solve your issues yourself, with your might. Don't go looking for help, or the enemy will think you are weak.
A cannon can't bring that prick down!
-No need for cannons. We'll just gently tug him by the balls.
I don't believe in that approach. We've got to crush him. With a sledgehammer!
- No. Only a subtle approach works with his kind. This here is our leverage. Facts.
