An entertaining and informative novel. There are some details about war time ex-Yugoslavia including Bosnia, Croatia and Slovenia; and "neutral" Switzerland . The cruelty of war is shocking. A good style that mixes fictional and true events and personalities keeps your attention. It is mixed with humour and sarcasm. Quite enjoyable.

This book is a bit more plodding than others in the series but it is a fascinating look into what was happening in Croatia and Bosnia during WWII with ethnic based massacres. I also appreciated the background on how Switzerland was able to preserve its neutrality during WWII, i had not appreciated the geographical advantage this country has against invasion.
The love story weaving the historical background is a bit trite, but overall a good read as usual.

I really liked this book. I've been to Berlin and a lot of the places Bernie traveled too so it made the always-interesting historical time frame even more fascinating. First Bernie book I've read of the series, but I will definitely be reading more.

This was my first crack at the Bernie Gunther series. The story itself was mildly interesting. It is certainly filled with heady insights on the evil of man. Overall, I found it less compelling due to the fact that it continuously moved on to different settings making it feel like a travelogue. While the protagonist was wise-cracking and flawed, he didn't make me want to read another in the series.

This is the tenth book in the Bernie Gunther series, all of which I have read. I think the tenth is his best.
