I liked this DVD. It has a happy ending. One of the main characters are an aging elderly senior citizen. The script is strong. It is well acted. It is good for all ages. The story is slow moving. You may relate to the experience of the actors. I like Maggie Smith as an actress.

It is interesting to read some of the other reviews. While this "option" for home purchasing is not available in Canada it does actually exist in France - and the movie is probably based off a very famous case where the lady did out live several of her investors.
I actually found the movie quite well acted and but very sad. It provided a very good demonstration how a poor choice (infidelity) by two individuals has a cascade effect on numerous people on generations. In particular I found Kevin Cline's acting amazing - he has hit rock bottom and is very desperate. I also found his acting as an alcoholic very realistic unlike some other versions that make the person into a falling down drunk or a comedy.
My only disappointment was the end hook-up - which was pretty unrealistic.

Love Maggie Smith, did not like this movie. I gave up about 1/2 way through. Ridiculous movie!

Main character is a terrible person, he seems to have hit rock bottom, but somehow goes even lower and in the end he doesn't really redeem himself either.
Slow, awful movie.
Definitely a drama, not a comedy.

Kevin Kline is absolutely BRILLIANT in his performance.

I'd say that based on the painful and seemingly long story, he is the one who saves this movie. Smith and Scott-Thomas are nothing remarkable; they play what they have been playing for the longest time.

There is wonderfully-artistic, beautiful, and terribly moving scene between Kline and an opera singer by the Seine.... now that was a treat!

Good Actors, but the movie stretches out with not too much of a story. It could have been 1/2 as long.

Odd, slow, well-acted. Probably good, but definitely an acquired taste.

Not a favorite by any means, I'm still not sure what this movie was about, but I love both the leads.

A 108 minute (mostly bleak) catharsis, that was executed skillfully by a talented trio of lead actors.

This is quite serious. It shouldn't be considered a comedy. It's a drama with a few light moments. It's mostly heavy stuff about suicide, family, affairs, responsibility, and consequences of one's actions. Do not get this if you need a fun light movie. It also didn't work as a drama for me either. The characters spend a ton of time in discussion about painful event's from their childhoods. It never really goes anywhere. They basically talk about how terrible life can be for 2 hours and then the movie ends abruptly with a stupid insincere resolution. It's awful. The acting is convincing but every other aspect of the movie fails. The whole premise of a law that prevents Mathias from selling the apartment is never adequately explained enough to make any sense.

Mathilde, "Hmm. Well, when you're born English you stay English. Englishness is so obvious. You have no choice.

The "viager":
- It's a crazy system you've got here. Betting like that on people dying.
- It's a game of destiny. If the person dies quickly, it's your destiny to replace them. And if they don't die quickly? Then it's your destiny to pay to help them live.

My name is Mathias Gold. When I used to have friends, they called me Jim, and I would answer. I grew up on Park Avenue in New York City. My parents were wealthy. I was born with a silver knife in my back. Anytime anyone follows their heart, someone else gets their heart broken. There's always detritus, always hurt, always pain. Love is a limited substance. When you give love to someone new, you have to take it away from someone old. My father took every ounce of love he had and dumped it in Paris. People like us think we've been cursed by God, but, in fact, we've been cursed by our parents. You look in the mirror, and you see an adult. But you have to look more carefully. There's a big piece of you that never grew up.

Chole: What are you asking me?
Mathias: What you said yesterday when you said, "I'm not beautiful. I'm nearly old." Just could you say it again? Please?
Chole: I'm not beautiful. I'm nearly old?
Mathias: A perfect flower is nearly old.
