Directed by Lee Daniels in 2012 based on the 1995 novel of the same name by Pete Dexter, this American drama delves into the framed-up murder case in steamy 1960s South Florida.
In this outrageously entertaining film, Nicole Kidman plays a stereotyped blonde with the least brainpower who spreads her legs wide showing her scanty panties while opening her mouth and moaning in such a sexually provocative way that anybody could jerk off at once.
This is a good example of bad stereotyped filmmaking.
It's so lacking in substance and there seems to be a script deficiency.

UGH! Wants to be a David Lynch-ian "deeply weird" but cool flick, and for a small amount of time the weirdness hides how bad the movie is. It never stops hiding behind weird, and a frankly impressive cast, I can see how on paper Macy Gray/Zac Efron might have seen this as a good move (Lee Daniels had just done Precious, but folks this ain't Precious) they each manage to avoid being irrevocably damaged by the film. Nicole Kidman, Matthew McConaughey, John Cusak, David Oyelowo are all excellent actors (who owed someone a favour?) , making choices here, often HUGE choices, sometimes even the right ones, but they can't save this dreck, they just make the car crash this film is titillating viewing, but a view you'll hate yourself for in the morning.

This is a glimpse of some of the dark side found in all of us, as we watch while some characters go through more of a learning curve than others.
Credit to director Lee Daniels (Precious: 2009; Lee Daniels' The Butler: 2013; Star & Empire tv episodes), for trying to show real people and for the fine acting performances by Zac Efron (2017's Baywatch & The Greatest Showman), Mathew McConaughey (2016's Free State of Jones & Gold), John Cusack (Singularity: 2017; Distorted: 2018), Nicole Kidman (The Killing of a Sacred Deer: 2017 & Big Little Lies: tv), Macy Grey (2016's Papa & Cardboard Boxer).
Perhaps too weird and harsh for some, but did learn how to help someone with jellyfish sting burns, if your swimming in Florida waters!
The Bonus features have interviews with the director and supporting cast.

Hot dam a good movie with some sexual action. The director displayed the low life of southern Florida. But not for the week and timid. Some will find it distasteful but we said when the movie ended, "now there was a strange movie".

Skuzzy, perplexing, violent under belly of life.
This is the only thing I’ve seen Zac Efron in. Very handsome. Great in this role. Macy Gray was superb.
Terrible tragic choices that I couldn’t understand. Why did Zac like Nicole so much? I guess that’s the mystery of love. Nicole seemed stupid, trashy in the first half and a thinker in part of the 2nd half.
Difficult to watch at times, but good film.

A very interesting movie that I picked simply because of the characters/actors depicted on the cover. Zac played really well and real easy to look at.

In the yin and yang of life one might find themselves standing on a particular side of an issue. I like the Van Morison song about the philosopher's stone: somehow getting the gold out of ordinary life with all its suffering. But 'Precious' director, in the DVD extras, reveals his fondness for giving voice to those not often heard from. Perhaps future work from him will bring him closer to realizing the humanity of these under represented types. Else, the appeal will be somewhat narrow, though there will always be some audience for the morbid.

No spoilers here. This film is not for children, or people who can't decipher sub-text or can't watch the darker side of life. Man, this film is twisted every which way, and worth the weird ride. Zac Efron surprises with a depth that's unsuspected. Other talented, well-known actors, Nicole Kidman, John Cusack, Matthew McConaughey, and a lovely bit by Macy Gray, in deeply disturbing roles. Well, it's not a pretty film, but dang, it's a good one.
