Based on a true story about a 10-year-old boy who was imprisoned for murder in the Idaho Territory in the 1880s. Authentic dialogue and the author’s note about the real event, make this first-rate reading.

An unusual story, told from Jake's point of view. As if being imprisoned wasn't enough, the warden insists he learn to read and write!
At 136 pages, this would be a good choice for a reluctant reader.

The story of Jake, a 10 year old boy who served time for murder in the Idaho Territorial Penitentiary in 1885. (The story is based on a true newspaper account.) Jake's voice is honest and clear; his story will stay with you for a long time. Recommended for upper elementary and middle school. Lovely.
